Timeless Style: The Vintage Staples for Everyday Fashion Collectors

“Thanks, it’s vintage.” Three little words, worn like a badge of honour in this era of relentless fast fashion and algorithm-driven trends. When quality feels rare and individuality even rarer, owning a vintage piece has become the ultimate flex–a nod to craftsmanship and timeless style. But what exactly makes a vintage piece worth owning? With its recent surge in popularity, vintage shopping is more accessible than ever before. But there are certain foundational wardrobe pieces that will always be the ones to look out for. The key is knowing which ones.

I’ve been vintage shopping from as early as I could earn an allowance. I remember my 14 year old self taking the bus to downtown Vancouver after school, babysitting money in hand, combing through racks in search of treasure. Back then, vintage was the only way I could afford something truly special. Fast forward almost 20 years and a career spent covering fashion later, the affordability of vintage is still one of my favourite perks.

What I love most, though, is how vintage can transform a wardrobe. I saw that on a whole new level about 10 years ago when I first discovered the Toronto Vintage Show, shortly after moving to Toronto for a national TV job. Rows of carefully sourced pieces spanning decades. Knowledgeable vendors who knew every label and stitch. Quality and construction you simply do not see as often today. In many ways, it reminded me of that excited 14 year old on the bus, except this time I had a trained fashion journalist eye and the experience to truly understand what I was looking at. The show did not just grow my collection. It deepened my knowledge of what is actually worth investing in.

After years of hunting and wearing vintage, I have learned exactly what deserves a place in your wardrobe, no matter your age, budget, or personal style. So whether you are new to the vintage world or a fellow connoisseur like moi, these are the pieces I think every fashion collector needs:

A Perfectly Worn-In Leather Jacket

Nothing says effortless cool like a leather jacket that’s seen a few adventures. The creases, scuffs, and broken-in softness tell a story, and wearing it instantly adds edge to anything from jeans to a cocktail dress. Look for a moto or bomber style, as those stand the test of time.

Bold Costume Jewelry and Brooches

Oversized, sparkly, and built to last, vintage costume jewelry can turn even the simplest outfit into a showstopper. And with brooches now enjoying their moment in the spotlight, buying them vintage is a must (you’ll find every shape, style, and size imaginable). They add the perfect punctuation to a blazer, coat, or even a chunky knit.

Menswear-Inspired Classics (An Over-Sized Blazer or Full Suiting)

Suiting hasn’t changed much in decades, which makes vintage pieces a smart way to add quality and structure to your wardrobe. Everyone needs a few blazers or full suits: wear them separately for effortless layering or together for a classic, polished look. Look for ones in a neutral color or a timeless pattern like a pinstripe so it works with everything.

A Memorable Black Gown

We all know the LBD is a staple, but when a black-tie dress code calls, a vintage black gown gives you that extra wow factor. Seek out unexpected details, such as dramatic sleeves, decadent fabrics, or subtle vintage embroidery and beading – it will make a lasting impression. It’s the kind of dress that will have you stepping into any event with confidence and style.

A Vintage Fur Coat with a Classic Silhouette

Fur is super on-trend right now, but buying it vintage is a smart and sustainable choice. It has kept people warm for centuries for a reason, and when properly cared for, it can last for generations. Slip one on and instantly add a luxe feel to any outfit- just choose a timeless silhouette that won’t tie you to a specific era.

A Sequined Topper (a jacket, top or tank)

We all need a bit of sparkle, and a sequined piece done right adds the perfect amount of texture and interest to any outfit. I love buying mine vintage, since older pieces were often handsewn rather than machine-made, giving them beautiful weight and quality. A sequined topper in rotation opens up more styling options than a full dress: pair it with jeans or dress pants, or layer it under a blazer.

Armed with a list of vintage wardrobe staples, it’s now time to go hunting! The Toronto Vintage Show returns on March 28 and 29 to the Queen Elizabeth Building at Exhibition Place. 125 leading shops and vendors showcase the very best of their collections – all those rare, interesting and high-quality pieces. It’s my favourite time of year, and as Canada’s largest sale of vintage clothing, the show is the perfect place to score these must-have pieces… and maybe a few delightful surprises along the way.
