If you’re a woman who’s struggling at finding a man or being in a relationship, it’s more than likely that it isn’t your fault. Award-winning magazine writer and author Jon Birger found a scientific reason behind this.
“The rise of the hookup culture and the decline in marriage rates among the college-educated had nothing or very little to do with porn or Facebook or anything else. It was largely to do with these uneven gender ratios, these uneven sex ratios. And science showed that when men are in oversupply, the dating culture is more monogamous. But when women are in oversupply, the dating culture is less monogamous. Women are more likely to be treated as sex objects, which is really what we’ve seen over the past 10 – 20 years,” Jon Birger told Elise Gasbarrino on this week’s episode of Let’s Talk About.
In his book called Date-onomics: How Dating became a Lopsided Numbers Game, Jon talks further about this pop-science phenomenon. He compared data from big and small cities in the US and found that this gender imbalance is happening everywhere.
Given this fact, is it still possible for women to find a man or be in a good relationship? The answer is yes. However, Jon believes that in order to achieve this, women should not follow the trend in today’s dating culture, which is none other than using dating apps to find a partner. Besides the fact that it is considered to be unsafe for women, the anxieties associated with online dating have a huge effect on the relationship outcome.
“If you enter the first day with so much skepticism and anxiety, you are not going to fall in love. Never mind falling. Those that have been on dating apps for a while, and I saw it in myself too, when you do meet a good person, you are kind of running through that behaviour [being skeptic towards the person you’re seeing] that was ingrained in you from these dating apps, like, okay, where is the hole?” he said.
Last year, Jon released his second book titled, Make Your Move, where he shares fact-supported advice for women to win at love. He shares his advice and takeaway on today’s dating culture with STYLE Canada on this week’s episode of Let’s Talk About.
