Meet Brodie, the face behind Modern Sunday

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a designer. I began my career over a decade ago working for a major Canadian fashion brand, but I soon came to realise just how harmful the fast fashion industry could be, and decided that I no longer wanted to be a part of it. That decision completely changed the trajectory of my entire life.
What started as a passion project during the pandemic has grown into something bigger than I ever could have imagined. My goal has always been to make women feel as good about the clothes as they do in them, because I believe we shouldn’t have to sacrifice style for sustainability. Being able to get up and work towards that goal every day is honestly the best feeling. If I could go back and tell 4 year old Brodie that this is where we are now, I think she would be one very happy little fashionista.
When I’m not working on the brand, you can usually find me sitting in the sun reading a book, cooking up a new recipe, playing chess, or planning my next getaway!

Modern Sunday is a female-founded sustainable fashion label that was built around our values of sustainability, integrity, innovation and community. Each garment is ethically made in Toronto, and designed to stand the test of time, both in quality and style.
We believe in choosing quality over quantity whenever possible. We believe that you should be able to shop your values without compromising your style, which is why we pride ourselves in creating effortlessly chic pieces using all natural and deadstock fabrics. Our elevated wardrobe essentials are designed to fit seamlessly into your life and your closet.
Our brand story started in August 2020 with the goal of making cute, sustainable face masks while reducing the amount of waste as a result of the pandemic. We set out not to build a fashion brand, but to provide a creative and sustainable solution to an obvious problem we saw in the market. From there, we have grown and evolved so much, and are so thrilled to be celebrating our 4th birthday in August!
What inspires you?

My answer to this is always changing, because I find myself intensely inspired by different things throughout the years. Architecture is one of the main things that always sticks with me – whenever I travel somewhere new, I’m always amazed by the beautiful old buildings that have so much history, and such incredible craftsmanship.
Although Modern Sunday’s pieces are designed to be very effortless and relaxed, I often think of clothing as ‘architecture for the body’, and that translates through to my designs in terms of the proportions, symmetry, and clean lines. But on the other side of that, I’m so inspired by forms found in nature, and how they can be so soft and completely unique, but also geometrically perfect. It’s something that constantly amazes and inspires me.
When I’m working on designing a new collection, I often find myself scrolling through images I’ve saved relating to proportions, colours, textures. I love seeing a collection come together that encompasses the mood I’m feeling, and trying to convey in my work. It’s chaos in my mind (and my sketchbook), until it’s not, and I find that to be such a beautiful process!
Where’s your favourite summer vacation spot?
If I’m going on a summer vacation, it’s most likely somewhere in Europe! There is so much to see that I rarely visit the same place twice. I absolutely love exploring new cities, trying new foods, and getting lost in little back streets. The top of my list right now is Portugal, especially the Algarve, so fingers crossed I can make that happen in September, once our busiest season starts to calm down.
One thing I always love to do when travelling is to seek out fabric stores, I just can’t help myself. I love seeing the different colours and textures, and sometimes I’ll even buy some fabric to bring home as a special limited collection drop. Right now I’m working on a new style for a gorgeous designer deadstock fabric I bought in Australia in 2023… which should be launching very soon if all goes according to plan!
What can we expect from your brand in 2024?

We have lots of exciting plans for this year, and into the beginning of 2025! As demand for our sustainable wardrobe essentials has grown, we have expanded our team, and our head seamstress has moved into a larger studio and hired more help. It’s been an exciting but challenging time as we navigate our growth, but I am loving every minute of it!
One thing we’ve been working on is bringing the brand to new destinations. We have positioned ourselves as a sustainable luxury resort brand, so we’re really leaning into that and working on securing stockists and popups in resort towns and new countries – including Australia!
We’re always working on expanding our product line, so you can expect a couple gorgeous new fabrics from us this fall, but I can’t share too much yet…
