Today, the significance of inclusive communities cannot be emphasized enough. Specifically, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities play a crucial role in fostering acceptance, support, and empowerment for individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or any other sexuality within the 2SLGBTQIA+ spectrum. By recognizing and embracing diversity, these communities promote social progress and create safe spaces for people to genuinely express themselves.
In the dynamic and diverse world of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, two names stand out as trailblazers in Toronto’s vibrant queer scene. Both are artists in their own right; they lead by example and share a commitment to empowering others to live authentically with pride, so that everyone can reach their full potential.
With an electrifying stage presence, fierce fashion sense, and passion for pushing boundaries, Jayjay Kings has redefined what it means to be a drag queen in the city. Equipped with a captivating persona, unique style and commitment to self-expression, Jayjay is more than just a drag queen; she is a force of power, creativity, and authenticity.
Growing up, Jayjay was always this big city, fashionista, drag, content creator and ICON – she just did not know it yet! Kings grew up in a small town where there were few people like her. She realized at an early age that she was different and that she did not like to participate in the same activities that other little boys were involved with. She used to play for hours at her grandparents’ house and sneak into her mom’s childhood closet. She discovered she was more interested in playing with barbie dolls, especially styling their hair, rather than doing typical boy stuff. She was always drawn to the big city life – Jayjay moved to Toronto and was immediately embraced by the LGBTQIA+ community, creating lifetime friendships. She has worked as a club kid, promoter, model, and self-taught make-up artist.
Today, through performances, Jayjay challenges societal norms, embraces individuality, and fearlessly explores gender and identity. Shows are a celebration of self-expression, empowering audiences to embrace their true selves and break free from societal constraints. Kings is passionate about creating an inclusive space where everyone of all backgrounds, cultures and orientations can feel seen, heard, and appreciated.
Jayjay extends the influence of drag beyond the confines of the stage, using his platform to advocate for social causes and raise awareness of prominent issues. By lending her voice to support LGBTQIA+ organizations, participating in charity events, gracing fashion week runways, content creation, and speaking out on matters of equality and inclusion.
Jayjay amplifies the voices of marginalized communities – helping to dismantle stereotypes and fosters a more accepting and diverse society. Passionate about building a welcoming community, Kings always creates a sense of camaraderie and support among fellow performers, aspiring artists, creators and drag enthusiasts. By organizing events, hosting workshops, and mentoring emerging talents, Jayjay nurtures a space where individuals can explore their creativity, develop their skills, and find a sense of belonging within the community.
“We need to allow everyone to tell their stories and experiences in their own words and allow them the same opportunities to create as everyone else.”
~ Jayjay Kings
NSBKIM Photography, led by Getty Images, Fashion, Lifestyle and Wedding Photographer, Nancy Kim, stands as a powerful force in the world of photography, promoting inclusivity, empowerment, and representation. Through her lens, Nancy captures the beauty of diversity, challenges the norms, celebrates Korean culture, and encourages individuals to embrace their authenticity. NSBKIM Photography serves as a powerful reminder that photography has the power to shape narratives, and break barriers.
Kim is a second-generation Korean Canadian, her journey began like many others, with a deep sense of self-exploration during her teenage years. Growing up in a small town presented additional obstacles when it came to understanding and accepting her sexual orientation. Limited exposure to 2SLGBTQIA+ representation and societal expectations that often reinforce heteronormative norms meant that Nancy had to embark on an introspective journey to discover her identity. Her friends tell stories from her high school years, reflecting on the fact that she would date men but would be more interested in learning about their cars than learning about them.
Nancy and Jayjay intensify the voices of marginalized communities – helping to dismantle stereotypes and fosters a more accepting and diverse society. Passionate about building a welcoming community, Kim and Kings prioritize creating a sense of camaraderie and support among fellow performers, aspiring artists, creators, and entertainers. By organizing events, hosting workshops, and mentoring emerging talents, Jayjay nurtures a space where individuals can explore their creativity, develop their skills, and find a sense of belonging within the community.
Recently, they collaborated on a special project for Pride Toronto, bringing together talented creatives from the 2SLGBTQIA+. The big brand video shoot took place at NSBKIM’s new Toronto studio and featured hair and wigs by Ryan Turner and lashes by Arianna Dharamshi from season 2 of 1 Queen 5 Queers and Dash of Ari.
With a sea of international supporters, it comes as no surprise that major brands are in cue to work with such beacons of change. You can catch one of Jayjay’s drag shows at the El Convento Rico, follow IG: @jayjaykings, TikTok: @jayjaykings or catch a glimpse of her in the Toronto Pride Parade 2023! Through education, awareness campaigns, and open dialogue, inclusive communities encourage society to recognize the inherent value and humanity of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity – nurturing equality for all!
