Toronto has always offered a plethora of art events during the summer months for students and art enthusiasts alike to continue their self education and exploration. Being mid-July already, it seems like summer is passing by faster than we can actually enjoy it. Thankfully, there are still many events to enjoy in the next 8 weeks before we bid farewell to short sleeves, swimming pools, and warm breezy nights. Every. Now. Then: Reframing Nationhood
The first on our list of top 5 art moments in toronto. Canada’s 150th birth year is celebrated in this exhibit, located on the entire fourth floor of the AGO’s Contemporary Tower. The exhibit features some of Canada’s emerging artists with those already established, providing an array of visual explorations that answer to Canada’s history and future as a nation. The aim is for the visitors to reflect on Canada’s journey: Where has Canada come from, what it is now, and where is it going?

2017 Art Battle Canada National Championships
Celebrating the best in live painting, art battle is a competition in which painters create the best work they can in 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes passes, the audience votes for the best painting as the winner. The audience also bids on their favourite works to take home after each round. This event is the finale of a series of over 150 events across the country since last summer. This event features the best of the best of live painters, on a night of creative community celebration.

The Bloorcourt Arts and Crafts Fair
This festival in Bloorcourt BIA is one of Toronto’s largest gatherings of arts and culture this summer – rallying artists, musicians, artisans, and masters of all crafts in one location. The artisans will be sharing their trades and products like ceramics, fabrics, jewellery, paintings, and more. Fun for all ages, the event provides interactive games and events for kids and families. The entire street is filled with live music as you explore the trades of the local and veteran artists.

Making Peace
This public exhibit aims to engage people of all ages in what it means to create a sustainable peace. The large outdoor photographic exhibition (curated by Ashley Woods) pays tribute to the people who devote their time, energy and resources to the cause of peace. ‘Making Peace’ provides an opportunity for people to get involved in bringing about positive change in their environment.

Ydessa Hendeles: The Milliner’s Daughter
Ydessa Hendeles, a Canadian artist/curator, a first retrospective of the famed woman who helped build the Toronto art scene. She helped launch the careers of well known artists like Jeff Wall and Rodney Graham, all while building her own voice. The collection of the past decade explores perceptions of difference and diversity, creating narratives through objects. Communicating to the world, Hendeles reflects about the way representation and appropriation of culture shapes identities in society.
