Meet #LeadingLady Magdalena Selma: Manager And Benefactress

As a group of women working towards common goals for STYLE Canada‘s brand and business, we understand the value of peer support in the workplace. So, we decided to bring like-minded ladies in business together for dinner with Soho House Toronto last Fall to discuss how they got sh*t done while supporting one another. STYLE’s Supper Club at Soho House has now become a quarterly event for storytelling, networking, inspiring, and so much more.

After this month’s Supper Club, we decided to feature the women who make these events as beneficial and empowering as they are, and we’ll continue to feature them throughout the year in our #LeadingLadies series. Here’s hoping that we’ll see you at our next Supper Club. Keep your eyes peeled on our events page for more details.

Magdalena Selma – Manager And Benefactress

City: Toronto

Industry: Financial Services

Side Hustle: A social initiative in the works called Options For Me.

SC: What has your career path looked like?

MS: The word yes. When graduating from university I had no clue what I wanted to do in business. I joined a graduate leadership program and from there I said yes to roles in analytics, marketing, and product management across telecommunications, technology, and finance. Saying yes has led to interesting experiences across various organizational structures where I’ve had the great fortune of learning new skills from some very intelligent colleagues. I’m incredibly grateful for the toolkit of experiences I’ve gathered over the past few years, and to now be in the perfect role for me at this stage in my career: managing a loyalty and benefits program for commercial clients at a top financial institution.

SC: How would your friends describe you?

MS: Creative, solution oriented, and considerate. I’m the art guru in our powerhouse friend group and my friends are genuinely superstars! They’d say I think I’m funnier than I actually am – that’s a frequent debate topic between us and I’m sad to say, I often lose.

SC: What social issues are you most passionate about?

MS: The lack of access to opportunities for underprivileged youth, causing more disparity for them as adults. I’m passionate about creating experiences that allow for equal access to opportunities regardless of socioeconomic class. I love the idea of being able to show kids what it’s like to work at a company that’s influencing the real world in a positive, dynamic way.

SC: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

MS: Trust your intuition. Also, join the Raptors seasons tickets waitlist ASAP.

SC: Do you have any resolutions for 2020?

MS: I don’t really have resolutions, but, I try to set new goals for myself throughout the year. In 2020 I’m focusing on three in particular: taking better care of my muscles using Essentrics training, expanding the Options For Me program beyond pilot stage and securing non-profit status, and working on being more mindful through starting a journaling practice. I want to be able to appreciate the little wonders in my life more, be kind to others, and practice empathy.
