It’s Christmas and You’ve Lost Your Job. Seven months into the pandemic, financial losses have proven to be devastating for so many people. This is especially true for those that have lost their jobs.
Bills haven’t stopped coming in because of COVID-19, and the stress of being unemployed around the holidays is something that no one should have to deal with.
If you or someone you know is struggling to get back on their feet, consider the five tips below.
#1: Review Your Spending
Now is the time to take inventory of your spending. Do you have any wiggle room in your budget to move funds around? Do you even have a budget? Now is the time to make one.
You may want to pause any savings or retirement goals you’ve set to focus on your needs.
#2: Look Into Starting An EI Claim
Make sure you’re fully eligible for EI to avoid paying back any government assistance you receive. Review the terms of EI here.
#3: Update Your Resume And Get Networking
While you’re online, why not take a look at your LinkedIn and make necessary updates? Review your resume as well.
#4: Talk To Your Lenders
It’s time to make some calls. Phone any type of creditor that charges you interest for things like credit cards and/or student loans to see if you can get your rate changed. Take a look at this article for some helpful tips.
#5: Take Time To Grieve The Loss Of Your Job
Our identities are so interwoven with our jobs and job titles, so give yourself the time and space to grieve your loss of employment. If you’re able to access therapy or exercise, this may help you make sense of what’s happened.
One day, this period of constant change and uncertainty will come to an end. Right now, that’s hard to imagine, but right now is also an opportune time to regroup, recharge, and plan.
Reach out to your virtual network, set up some informational interviews, and make sure to go outside and move your body. Take care of you first.
