Emily De Sousa is a Portuguese-Canadian sustainable seafood educator based in Niagara, ON. Her brand, Seaside with Emily, is a unique resource for coastal travellers and seafood lovers. The brand acts as an online education platform, teaching followers about healthy oceans, sustainable seafood, and culinary adventures focused on the rise of ‘Pescatourism’.
Emily is a trained fisheries scientist, having completed her master’s degree at the University of Guelph with a focus on small-scale fisheries in North America and the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on seafood supply chains. While continuing to run her own business, she is also called on by various organizations to support sustainable fisheries. Currently, she consults for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a Market Expert on Fisheries and Aquaculture Products.
Her work in seafood has been recognized globally. She has spoken at TEDx, been the recipient of the Canadian Science Policy Centre’s Youth Excellence Award for her policy proposal on ending seafood fraud in Canada, and been featured in Good Morning America as a sustainable seafood expert.
Emily is a female leader in a male-dominated industry. She uses her skills to explain a topic so misunderstood by the average consumer – sustainable seafood! She is passionate about changing the way Canadians think about seafood and showcasing the diversity of sustainable seafood available along our country’s shores. Everyday she creates and produces resources that make it easier for people to navigate the seafood counter and make responsible seafood choices, without feeling overwhelmed.
