From Muskoka to Toronto: How Tara Miller Built Health Hut

What started as a small seasonal shop in Muskoka, has turned into a nationwide beauty and wellness brand. Today, Founder Tara Miller, is proud to share after 16 years in business she know has two year-round Toronto locations, three seasonal Muskoka shops, a thriving online store. Tara Miller has turned Health Hut into a destination for those looking to bring a little more intention into their everyday routines. Today, we caught up with her to learn more about her Health Hut journey.

A Little Shop with Big Potential

Health Hut’s story begins in Muskoka, where Tara first introduced customers to a curated selection of natural health and wellness products. Over time, she noticed a shift in what people wanted. Customers were becoming more interested in natural beauty, and the demand for products that combined quality ingredients with a more luxurious experience was growing. She followed that shift, gradually introducing elevated beauty and skincare brands, including Tata Harper, and transforming Health Hut into the thoughtfully curated destination it is today.

The next step was bringing the concept to Toronto. After opening locations on Harbour Street and College Street, Tara continued expanding, even adding a Leslieville location during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, Health Hut has found its place in both city life and cottage country, allowing customers to shop their favourite products year-round or discover something new while spending the summer in Muskoka.

From Curating Products to Creating Her Own

After years of stocking other brands, Tara decided it was time to create something of her own. In 2019, Health Hut introduced its in-house product line, bringing her vision for natural beauty and everyday self-care to life. Having an established retail business gave her an advantage. She already knew her customers, understood what they gravitated toward and had years of experience seeing which products people came back for.

But as she quickly learned, knowing what customers love and creating a product they’ll love are two different things. Tara shares she initially developed products based on her own preferences, only to discover that customer feedback could change everything. Even details like packaging, which might seem minor during the creative process, made a difference in how people used and experienced a product. It’s been a learning experience, but one that has helped her shape the brand’s growing collection of hair and body care products, developed with partners based in Toronto. For Tara, it’s about creating products that feel like a natural extension of Health Hut rather than simply adding another name to the shelves.

Learning to Let Go

Ask any business owner about growing a company, and chances are they’ll tell you that one of the hardest parts is realizing you can’t do everything yourself. Tara knows that feeling well. As Health Hut expanded, so did the demands of running it. What began as a small seasonal operation became a business requiring retail managers, sales associates and people overseeing shipping, e-commerce, marketing and digital operations. Finding the right team hasn’t always been easy, and learning how to manage a growing business has come with its share of challenges.

The pandemic, in particular, pushed her to rethink how things were being done. It became an opportunity to put stronger systems in place and introduce management roles that could take some of the day-to-day responsibilities off her plate. She’s also learned the value of bringing in contractors for work that falls outside her expertise. Rather than trying to be involved in every detail, Tara has focused on building a team and finding people who can help move the business forward. It’s a lesson many entrepreneurs can relate to, growing a business means learning when to take the lead and when to trust someone else to take it from there.

The Next Chapter Looks a Little Different

While Health Hut’s retail locations remain an important part of the business, Tara is now looking beyond the storefront. Her focus is shifting toward growing the company’s own product line and bringing Health Hut into new spaces through wholesale partnerships. One area she’s particularly excited about is hospitality. Think beautifully stocked bathrooms in Muskoka cottages, hotels and vacation rentals, where guests can discover Health Hut products during their stay and bring a little piece of that experience home with them. It’s a natural fit for a brand with such strong roots in cottage country, and an opportunity to introduce Health Hut to customers who may not have visited one of its stores. The move also makes sense from a business perspective. With tariffs and the uncertainty surrounding imported products creating new challenges for retailers, Tara is putting more emphasis on developing products locally. Working with Toronto-based partners gives her greater control over production, pricing and the direction of the brand. And while she hasn’t ruled out opening more stores, she’s more interested in exploring what Health Hut can become beyond retail.

More to Come

For those who already have a few Health Hut favourites in their beauty cabinets, there’s plenty to look forward to. The brand is preparing a limited-edition artist collaboration for the holiday season, along with two new product launches planned for spring 2027. As Tara continues to build out the collection, her approach remains rooted in the same curiosity and willingness to evolve that brought Health Hut this far. What began as a small Muskoka shop has become a business with multiple locations, its own products and a growing presence in the Canadian beauty and wellness space. And perhaps that’s what makes Miller’s story so interesting. She hasn’t followed one fixed idea of what Health Hut should be. She’s allowed the business to grow, change and take her in directions she may not have imagined when she first opened its doors. Sixteen years later, Health Hut is still evolving, and Tara is just getting started on its next chapter.
