5 Unique Canadian Destinations For Solo Female Travellers Who Love The Outdoors

There’s a beautiful new trend surfacing on the internet that’s making grandmothers squirm: single ladies globetrotting alone. Being a solo female traveller can be more than daunting for some, but it doesn’t have to be unsafe. It can be empowering – you have control of your itinerary. Anything is possible.

If the idea of travelling alone interests you just as much as it scares you, take a deep breath. You don’t have to go across the world to enjoy an incredible vacation – Canada has kilometres upon kilometres of unparalleled landscape to explore. And if you’re planning your next trip around outdoor activity as a result of COVID-19, there’s no better time to take advantage of what The North has to offer.

Here’s five unique destinations for solo female travellers to visit in 2020 and beyond:

Churchill is the most Northern part of Manitoba and the town of Cape Merry is extra special in the summer – it’s the world’s best destination for polar bear sightings (the marine mammals greatly outnumber the 900 people who live there). With an amazing view of the Northern Lights and over 300 nights of active Aurora borealis, its a must-see for any woman travelling solo.

2) The Enchanted Forest – Revelstoke, B.C.

If you’re looking for an immersive way to experience nature and fairytales, look no further because The Enchanted Forest is probably the coolest retirement project anyone has ever completed. Yes, it’s exactly what you’re visualizing: trees that touch the sky, moss soft enough to sleep on, and woodland fairies that will make you feel like a Disney character.

3) Athabasca Sand Dunes – Lake Athabasca, Sask.

Without visiting the Egyptian desert, you can still see incredible sand dunes: The Athabascas, in Lake Athabasca, Sask. At first glance, it doesn’t make sense: how can Sask., (with an average temperature of 15 degrees celsius), have sand dunes that stretch 100 kilometres? The best part: you get around by dune buggy. Can you really beat an experience like that?

4) Puffin and Whale Watch – Witless Bay, N.L.

There are some incredible boat tours through Atlantic Canada that feature breathtaking puffin and whale watching, and Witless Bay in N.L. is a destination where you’ll see more puffins and whales than you can imagine. The tours go around icebergs and last under two hours. The summer is actually one of the most popular times to see whales and puffins in Witless Bay, so this trip is essential for any solo traveller who doesn’t mind a chilly breeze.

5) Johnston Canyon – Banff, Alta.

The Rocky Mountains are one the most talked-about Canadian travel destinations for good reason: they’re beautiful and bring in millions of tourists every year. If you go a little bit deeper into the mountains, Johnston Canyon is an ideal spot for seasoned hikers. In the summer, you can see icy waterfalls, deep caves, fast-moving creeks, and high altitude footbridges. Take your time on the paths or bike along the trails and soak it all in.
