Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the prettiest little towns in Canada for a simple reason, it truly is pretty perfect. We recently chatted with the team at Tourism Niagara-on-the-Lake for a behind the scenes look at what the organization does to make this town a must-see for folks worldwide. Let’s dive in, and don’t forget to pack your favourites for community events (like Pink Pearl’s We Step Together happening this Sunday!), wine tastings, and afternoons at The Shaw.
Tell us a little bit about what Tourism NOTL does.
Tourism Niagara-on-the-Lake is the official destination marketing organization for one of Canada’s most storied towns. We invite visitors to experience Niagara-on-the-Lake as a year-round wine country destination, with an incredible farm-to-table dining scene, rich arts, culture, and heritage, destination spas, and world-renowned theatre. We work closely with local businesses who help shape a visitor experience that feels welcoming, authentic, and unforgettable.
When people first arrive in NOTL, where are a few must-see destinations they should check out?

We encourage visitors to start in the Heritage District, where boutique shops and beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture line the street. Then explore Fort George National Historic Site and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, which tells the story of the town’s role as the first capital of Upper Canada and in the War of 1812. Spend an afternoon in the vineyards, where 40 wineries and many other craft beverage sites offer a closer taste of wine country.
Any new and exciting experiences that visitors (and locals!) should know about?

Events are what bring Niagara-on-the-Lake to life as the season turns. In early December, locals and visitors are invited to celebrate the Candlelight Stroll, a charming tradition that rings in the holiday season with warm candlelight, festive cheer, and a reason to give. In mid-January 2027, the Icewine Festival returns for two weekends, celebrating the region’s iconic Icewine right at the heart of town.
The Shaw Festival returns with its holiday performances in early November, featuring Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella and A Year with Frog and Toad.
What would you say makes the fall/winter a fun time for a visit?

There’s so much Niagara-on-the-Lake offers late in the season. First is its beautiful scenery, whether it be the leaves and vineyards turning colour in fall or winters snow-covered streets that turn the town into a movie set. Outdoor experiences are easy to enjoy, like a walk in a vibrant park or skating when the rinks open up. The seasons also inspire menus across the region. Think pumpkin, squash, and apples in fall and hearty comfort dishes and Icewine pairings as winter approaches. Then when the streets light up for the holidays, the town feels truly magical. It’s something most don’t want to miss.
Anything people should book in advance or leave to chance?
We recommend booking any accommodations and dining reservations ahead of time, along with group tastings and tours, especially during weekends and holidays. Beyond that, leaving your itinerary open is the best way to explore Niagara-on-the-Lake at your own pace and take in all the season has to offer.
