Tell us a little about yourself

Fashion/retail has been a lifelong passion. Beginning my journey as a designer, I achieved recognition for designing all the bags for the FIFA World Cup 2002—an early highlight in my career. Transitioning swiftly, I embarked on a dynamic 20+-year tenure as an apparel merchant, spearheading buying teams and collaborating with renowned brands such as Ralph Lauren, Club Monaco, and prestigious global department stores. Fast forward to 2020, where I founded Retail Strategy Group. Presently, my focus lies in helping brands and retailers improve organizational effectiveness and increase profitability.

Being a Changemaker is all about knowing where you come from and to have the courage to take a new step forward. What gives you courage to live out your story? 

As a woman of color holding a prominent position in the retail industry, I swiftly recognized the unique advantage I possessed. With a career spent collaborating with various brands and retailers, offering guidance felt like second nature as I effortlessly communicated in their language. My trajectory, from the daughter of immigrants to a thriving merchant, and now the proprietor of a successful business, stands as a testament to my unwavering resilience and relentless determination. Throughout this journey, my identity as a woman has been an integral component of my success story.

Everyone’s story is comprised of many chapters, what was one of the most influential ones in your journey?

After leaving my dream job at Ralph Lauren in London, where I served as the Head of Buying for the Lauren brand in Northern Europe, I felt compelled to embark on a new path. Upon returning to Canada, uncertain of my next step, an opportunity arose when Accenture approached me. Embracing the chance to change course, I transitioned into Accenture’s Retail group as their merchandising expert. This transition introduced me to a whole new sphere of challenges, and I swiftly adapted to my role, collaborating with top performers worldwide. My tenure at Nike proved to be an extraordinary experience, fostering valuable connections and reinforcing my belief in my ability to tackle formidable tasks. However, the onset of the pandemic wrought significant changes upon the retail landscape, prompting the inception of the Retail Strategy Group—a pivotal moment in my career journey.

What would your 15 year old self be most proud of that you have accomplished?

As a board member of the Women of Color Retail Alliance (WOCRA), I am deeply involved in mentoring numerous young women within the retail sector. Reflecting on my own journey in this industry, I recognize the importance of giving back to my community and empowering fellow women in fashion and retail. Having lacked such support during my formative years, I am committed to providing the guidance and encouragement that I yearned for. I firmly believe that representation is pivotal, and my aim is to exemplify what is achievable for other women. I take pride in fearlessly utilizing my voice, and I am dedicated to instilling the same courage in others.

What do you hope is the legacy you will leave behind? 

It is important for me to empower the women around me, showing them that being a woman and woman of color is not a limitation but a source of strength. I am still learning every day, understanding the nuances of navigating the business world as a woman, but it only fuels my commitment to support and uplift others on similar paths.
The legacy I want to leave behind is one of resilience, leadership, and empowerment, inspiring future generations to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue excellence.
