Love On Hold: 2022 Will Be The Year Of Weddings

For the past 16 months, wedding celebrations across Canada have been scaled back, subdued, or in many cases, indefinitely postponed. Those who chose to say “I do” were forced to get creative. In 2020 we saw the rise of small intimate ceremonies, private elopements and of course, Zoom weddings. So with lockdowns now coming to an end, what does this mean for those who have waited? Despite restrictions being lifted and a mass vaccine rollout, the pandemic is unfortunately still not quite over, especially when it comes to large gatherings. For this reason, many couples who plan on marrying in the next few months have created two-tier wedding lists. A larger list, if capacity allows and a smaller, edited down version in case of last minute restrictions being imposed. While in the past this would largely be considered a wedding faux-pas, people have acclimated to the changing landscapes and are far more understanding that, for the foreseeable future this may be the new normal. With so much uncertainty still lingering as to what Phase three may entail, it’s best to assume that (at least) for the rest of 2021, smaller outdoor gatherings are a safer bet, in terms of both your guest’s comfort levels and any changing government regulations.

COVID-19 undoubtedly put additional stressors on couples, but it also brought many closer together. A recent study conducted by Signet (the parent company of Canada’s largest jewelry retailer, Peoples Jewelers) found that 71 per cent of couples reported that the pandemic actually had a positive impact on their relationships, with many taking things to the next level by either getting engaged or moving in together. This influx of engaged couples, paired with those who are holding off in the hopes of having a larger celebration, have those in the industry predicting an enormous surge in weddings for 2022. Weddings are ultimately about celebrating your love, and for many, that is something they want to share with and in front of the people they love the most. We have all made sacrifices over the last year, and not wanting to make one when it comes to a day as important as your wedding day is completely understandable.

Much like what is happening this summer in the United States, wedding vendors, photographers, make-up artists, and florists are already filling up for next year. With an unprecedented influx in demand, they are trying to find solutions to accommodate those who needed to reschedule their weddings, with all of the weddings that were previously booked.  It’s been a long and trying year but as you can see, there will be no shortage of celebrations in the months and years to come.
